Relegated twice - so why do Man Utd want Fernandes?

Manchester United are interested in signing West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, with Arsenal and PSG also linked to the player.

This is despite the Portuguese midfielder being relegated from the Premier League in each of the last two seasons with Southampton and West Ham - so what is the appeal?

Alvarez's preference revealed after Real bid

Your Site News' Gary Cotterill:

"It's the Galactico bid that Florentino Perez was promising in that election campaign.

"Today, they name that player and make that bid. There is a big difference between a bid and bringing the player to the club. Maybe a bit of mischief-making, a little bit of living up to his promise.

"Alvarez is on a contract until 2030 and has a clause in that contract that a bid of 500m has to be made before they have to sell.

"That is a bit of protection for Atletico, it is not a realistic figure. A much smaller bid would be acceptable, somewhere around the 150m mark, if the player wanted to leave and the club were happy to sell him.

"Barcelona are also interested in the player, as were Arsenal and PSG but it has been made clear to them that the player wants to go to Barcelona, if he goes anywhere.

"Interesting bid. It is a little bit cheeky from Real Madrid."

Atleti remind Real of HUGE 430m Alvarez release clause...

Latest from Your Site News' Kaveh Solhekol:

Atletico Madrid have reminded Real Madrid of Julian Alvarez's 430m (500m) release clause after rejecting a bid of 129m (150m) for the striker from their rivals.

Barcelona have also made no secret of the fact that they want to sign him. Tuesday's development is bad news for them as it sets a benchmark price for the player.

Atletico signed Alvarez for 81m (94m) from Manchester City in 2024.

The player is contracted until 2030, with Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal also linked with a move. However, interested parties have been expecting Alvarez to join Barcelona.

Atletico mock Real on social media after Alvarez bid rejected

Atletico Madrid have taken to social media to mock their rivals after rejecting 129m (150m) bid for Julian Alvarez from Real Madrid

A statement from Real confirmed the bid had been rejected, with Atletico referring to Alvarez's release clause, despite the "good relations" between both clubs.

Atletico insist the 26-year-old is not for sale and value him as high as 130m.

Atletico then posted on X, formerly Twitter, mocking their local rivals, while also stating they would not consider any offer for their striker.

"You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don't thank you for anything.

"We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian. How could we not get along when you make us laugh even more than Barcelona."

A similar situation unfolded in May when Barcelona were linked with a move for the Argentina striker.

over their attempts to sign the player.

The club then posted parody posts of Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha in Atletico shirts.

Man Utd exploring Fernandes deal

Latest from Your Site News' Chris Reidy and Danyal Khan:

Manchester United are exploring a potential deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Your Site News understands West Ham value Fernandes at around 80m and are in no rush to sell the player. The Hammers signed the Portuguese midfielder for an initial fee of 38m last summer.

United are continuing to do background work on Fernandes as he is seen as a realistic deal after the Hammers' relegation, with midfield remaining a priority for the club to strengthen this window.

The club have already agreed a 38m deal to sign Atalanta midfielder .

Real Madrid confirm Arbeloa exit - Mourinho imminent?

Real Madrid have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Alvaro Arebloa to end his time as head coach of the club.

Arbeloa was appointed to the role in January, following the exit of Xabi Alonso, and guided the club to a second-place finish in LaLiga.

Your Site News understands Jose Mourinho is set to become the new head coach, returning to the Bernabeu for a second spell in charge, after Florentino Perez was re-elected as club president on Sunday.

Real Madrid announce 129m Julian Alvarez bid rejected

Real Madrid have announced they have had a 150m (129m) bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez rejected.

Alvarez is believed to be a top target for Barcelona, with Atletico previously insisting the player is not for sale.

A club statement reads: "Real Madrid C. F. announces that, following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian  Alvarez.

"After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player's release clause."

Rangers getting a complete forward in Shankland

Craig Gordon believes Rangers are getting quite a complete forward in new signing Lawrence Shankland.

The 30-year-old striker scored 20 goals for Hearts last season as they just missed out on an historic William Hill Premiership title with a last-game defeat at Celtic.

Shankland also scored in Scotlands 4-2 win over Denmark at Barclays Hampden last November which qualified the national team for the 2026 World Cup and has notched three times in their two warm-up wins against Curacao and Bolivia, in preparation for Saturdays opener against Haiti.

However, he will be playing for the Ibrox club on his return from the World Cup after leaving Tynecastle on a free transfer.

Jambos goalkeeper Gordon, 43, speaking at the Scots training base in Charlotte, North Carolina, said of the former Gorgie skipper: I think hes quite a complete forward now in terms of what he can bring to a team.

Hes been fantastic for the last few seasons at Hearts, really ever since he joined, not only the goals he scored but the leadership qualities that he brought to Hearts and thats really developed over the last few years.

Since he got handed the armband, he never looked back.

On the pitch, a really intelligent player.

I think hes added to that as hes got older to the point where hes no longer just a goalscorer.

He links the game well, hes a very intelligent, brings other players into play probably a lot more now than he did at the start of his career.

Hes in great form just now and I hope he can continue that during the World Cup.
